I just finished my first month as an MLS intern at Salem Hospital in Oregon. It has been FABULOUS so far!
Mad Scientist
My first 6 weeks are in the Chemistry area of the lab, so this week will be my last week in Chem before moving on to Hematology. This means I will start being able to work up to 20 paid hours per week in addition to my 40 hours of unpaid internship/work. So if all goes well, I will be spending 50-60 hours per week at the lab, not counting my exam and studying hours. It is very exciting.
The work is very fun, and it is very rewarding to see my hard work of the past years paying off. I work with great people who are so encouraging and willing to help me learn. Lab people are a funny bunch. I enjoy being a mad scientist among other mad scientists.
After a life of constant stress and discouragement, I am feeling happy and well. College was a difficult experience for me and my health; it is exciting to be on the home stretch.
Scott is working for a company called Tandem, which provides care and assistance for mentally handicapped adults. It is a rewarding field, and will be a good resume/application builder for graduate school. He is still weighing some career options, but narrowing it down. We are hoping to stay in Oregon, so we are looking into local schools and programs. It is an exciting time with lots of possibility for the future.
My future is looking bright at Salem Health after graduation, so keep your fingers crossed!
Outside of work and studying, Scott and I spend a lot of time organizing and arranging our home and spending time together. After 5 weeks of living here, we still have so many things without a place! It definitely feels like home to me now. A familiar place and a familiar Scott in a town that still feels so new and confusing. This move has been such a great experience for our marriage. I am so lucky to have a best friend and partner with me on this adventure.
I have been called to work with the youth in our ward at church. I am an advisor for the Mia Maids (14 year old girls). It is a very fun group. I am in charge of teaching lessons on Sundays and helping to plan and prepare for Wednesday night activities. It is difficult and new, especially as someone brand new to the area. I got very lost last Wednesday on the way to pick up one of my girls. Without a smartphone and given the wrong address, I had to call Scott in a panic to get directions from the Big internet Brain. Life in a new town is often an adventure.
Thank goodness we are close to a familiar town. Vancouver is only an hour away. It is very comforting to be able to drive to a place where I know where I am going, and see some familiar faces. Having family and friends close is wonderful, espcially since I left some behind in Utah.
Speaking of friends, Laura is home from England!!!!!!!! Hopefully she will be able to visit frequently.
Onward and upward.
