Scott's birthday was on the 22nd (Monday of this week), but because his brother came to town for the BYU football game on Saturday, we celebrated all weekend long!!
The week before the birthday was super busy (like all our weeks), because I had to juggle school, trying to be a cleaner housewife, and secretly buying and wrapping an extra large birthday gift!
Speaking of which, I totally slam dunked the gift-giving this year. I was so excited all month, because I had purchased the perfect Scott things, and just couldn't wait for the reaction. Scott kept telling me that he didn't even know what he wanted, so how in the world could I know?? We are practical gift givers--Scott and I both really enjoy gifts that are useful as well as fun. Knick knacks and silly gifts are fun, but they are more difficult for us to appreciate. So it was a great feeling to give gifts that showed Scott that I know him well, that were useful to him, and made him excited and happy. Are you wondering yet? Are you in suspense?
Well, let me tell you about Scott. He loves to listen to his music while taking a shower. He always brings our iHome speakers into the bathroom and uses a significant portion of our minimal counter space to get the speakers as close to the shower as possible. Also, he has to blast it in order to hear it over the sound of the water. So..knowing this, I bought him an awesome bluetooth waterproof shower speaker! Now I am happy, because I can leave my makeup and junk all over the counter, and Scott can hear his music so much better without the crazy iHome system. Plus, the speaker doubles as a bluetooth hands-free phone thing, so if you hear rushing water in the background of the phone call, you'll know Scott is using his shower speaker to the full measure of its creation..
Also, those of you who know Scott know about his motorcycle. He has an old '86 Honda Shadow, and he loves that machine. He rides it almost year round in Utah--basically until there is too much snow on the road to safely drive a 2-wheeled vehicle. It is an older bike, so he is constantly fixing it, tweaking it, and making it run smoothly. It is a constant project, but he is so excited when he fixes a problem or makes an improvement. For a long time now, Scott has wanted a windshield, but to him it is a luxury (especially since they cost at least $100 for a good quality one), and he hasn't wanted to spend the money. So I did a LOT of windshield research--read reviews, looked up brand names, model compatibility and assembly instructions--and my parents and I split the cost of an economical, but excellent quality windshield. This was an awesome man-gift because not only was it a fun and useful thing for the motorcycle, it was also a project kit. Scott got to read instructions, get out his tools, and attach the windshield to his bike. He was like a kid with a new lego set. And of course once it was on, he had to go ride around town to feel the difference it made in the amount of wind slamming into his body when he drives at any speed above 30 mph.
So basically, I have been on a "cool wife" high for a while. And it feels great.
Okay, now that am done boasting, I will fill you in on events. Like I mentioned earlier, Jared and Baylee were coming down from their home in Brigham City (2 hrs North of Provo) for the BYU football game on Saturday afternoon (yes, they are diehards..). And Solangie (Scott's youngest sister) is in the colorguard for the marching band, so she was also attending the game. For us, the party started after school and work with a MarioKart tournament while we waited for the game to end. After the football fans returned, we met up with Andrew Van Every (Scott's best friend and long-time roommate) at a Chinese Buffet. I have never really eaten at these places, but Scott frequented them as an LDS missionary in California. I guess buffets have a big appeal for 19 and 20-year-old boys who walk and bike ALL DAY. So it is almost a sentimental experience for him. Anyway, we went there and filled up on delicious fried food, teriyaki veggies, meat, and noodles. It was a blast. Then home for apple pie, ice cream, and catchphrase until it was time to call it a night (Jared and Baylee have two little girls and a 2 hr drive back to B.C.).
We all decided we weren't quite done partying together, so Solangie and Chris agreed to pack overnight bags and drive up to Brigham City with Jared and Baylee for another day of birthday fun! Sunday was the Ogden, UT LDS temple dedication, so we attended that in the morning, then ate the traditional Haynie tuna for lunch, tasty home-rotisserie chicken for dinner, and peach cobbler for dessert. So much good food!! More games, then home Sunday night. A great finale to a family birthday celebration.
Monday was the actual birthday, and since the family and friend celebration was over, it was kind of nice to celebrate just the two of us. We dipped tortilla chips in salsa and nacho cheese for dinner with leftover apple pie for dessert. It was fun to just have junk food and rent a movie (Nonstop). After the movie, I had to study for a quiz, so Scott went out to work on the Jeep--we are still tinkering with it to get it to pass emissions--and assemble his windshield, and go for a joyride. Basically I think it was one of the best birthdays I have done for him so far, and the celebration will continue when my family comes into town for the Hardwick reunion at Park City!!! Party party!!
Oh, and we went to a BYU Volleyball game with Josh Robinson and Stephen Merrill, and the BYU girls KILLED the Utes in three straight matches.
