In Which: I see friends, family and fireworks!

I am on vacation!!!
I flew out of Salt Lake City airport on the morning of July 4th to go home to Washington State.

People watching at the airport was a great way to pass the time. I saw many people sleeping in creative ways.

My flight was full, with no empty seats. At least three babies, and another few families with young kids. I was grateful for my headphones and a good book to read.

My parents have a new Independence Day tradition of attending the Timber Games in Longview, WA. Washington's history and economy is hugely based on the lumber industry, and apparently the lumberjack traditions and contests are still in practice! I got to see some national champs climb, saw, chop, and roll logs. I was especially impressed by how much good sportsmanship I saw from the participants.

I don't remember what this event was called, but they had to race up and back along this log and chop off the end with a chainsaw.

Three cuts with a chainsaw race

Jack and Jill saw race

Axe throwing--5 points to split the can of coke in the center of the target!

Master Springboard race! 70+ year old men use axes to chop notches and then place two boards in a tall stump to climb and then fell the top of the trunk. Amazing!

Later on, I finally got to reconnect with my best friend, Laura. I have known her since we were in preschool, and the 4th of July is her birthday! We played badminton in her front yard with her awesome mom and sister, then ate cake and went to see the fireworks at Fort Vancouver.

A fantastic finale to a fantastic Fourth!

I am so grateful to live in this country that has such a history of courage, sacrifice and patriotism. God Bless America! My home sweet home.
